Lyme is not just Lyme

Lyme is Really an Umbrella Term Now

Technically, Lyme disease is a spirochetal infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. But as more patients are becoming ill with Lyme disease, it has become an umbrella term for so much more.

There is a community of us that have been ill for a very long time. Many of us have been diagnosed with things such as MS, Lupus, Anxiety Disorders, Chronic Fatigue Disorder, Fibromyalgia and many other illnesses or conditions. Many of us believe we have what is called, “Chronic Lyme Disease.”

Usually people with Chronic Lyme Disease have been to many different doctors over a course of many years. They have gone through multiple  tests and never quite fit perfectly into the other diseases they have been diagnosed with. Sometimes but not always there has been a tick bite in the history of the patient, sometimes there’s been a bite from some other insect, sometimes  a rash, sometimes just a random mix of odd symptoms that come and go day to day, month to month, year to year. Sometimes there is a positive Lyme test.

Whether to say that the diagnosis of all these other diseases is a “misdiagnosis” maybe be a mistatement since the names are only referring to a group of symptoms. Take MS or Multiple Sclerosis, for example, this literally means, “multiple scars.” So to say to a patient who’s diagnosis is MS, that it is a misdiagnosis when they have lesions on their brain, would be false. Maybe the best way we could explain it to someone is we have, “Lyme Induced MS.” Maybe that would get rid of the pressure for people to “pick” what disease they have and allow them to open broader doors into treatment. Maybe we should be saying Lyme induced Fibromyalgia, and Lyme induced Chronic Fatigue or Lyme Induced PANDAS.

So what we are trying to say here, is that Lyme is not just Lyme. Lyme Disease is an umbrella term for a group of infections, conditions, viruses, parasites, disorders, and biotoxin build ups. Conditions may include, MS, Fibro, CFS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Disorder, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, pyschiatric disorders, and neurological disorders. Infections may include different bacterias or protozoans such as bartonella, babesia, erlichisosis, mycoplasma, Rocky Spotted Fever and many many more. Viruses may include Herpes, Epstein Barr Virus, Encephalitis and more.

Another point to consider is this:

Lyme is an autoimmune disease. It lowers your immune system. So do other things like mold exposure and stress. Everyone in the world carries viruses, bacteria and parasites in their bodies. When your immune system is not properly functioning, these opportunistic infections can take hold. For example if you have spirochetes floating around in your body, then get exposed to mold, that is a double whammy for you body. It really doesn’t matter what came first, the chicken of the egg, the mold or the Lyme, the Lyme or the parasite, the parasite or the stressor that lowered your immune system. The point is, your body is out of whack. It needs to be looked at as a whole, and healed as such.

Richard I. Horowitz, a board-certified MD specializing in internal medicine, is cofounder of the Hudson Valley Healing Arts Center in Hyde Park, New York. Dr. Horowitz is known for his pioneering work with Lyme disease and is recognized to be one of the country’s foremost experts on chronic illness and Lyme disease. He has started calling it, “Lyme and MSIDS (multi-systemic infectious disease syndrome).”

We as Lyme patients do everything in our power to treat the bacteria and the parasites that ticks pass onto us. Sometimes we get in the habit of thinking that “everything is Lyme.” We neglect to look outside the box at what may be other issues. Becoming healthy is a balance, so we should make sure we also deal with other physical ailments and emotional traumas that have happened to us or are happening to us also.

  1. Excellent! I always think of Lyme as an Umbrella ☔️ of a multitude of things. And to heal from a Lyme diagnosis you have to consider everything you listed. This will be great to share. Thanks for clearly laying it out under the Umbrella ☂

  2. Wonderful & way to go! Love that you are bravely taking this on…together we can make a difference! 😉 😀 Struggling with this mystery of diagnosis right now too. Please do add a section in the list for biotoxin illness, mold illness, and chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). And def keep up the GREAT work! <3

    1. Yes you are so right, I already have Mold and Biotoxin illness up there.. but Ill take a look at chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). Thank you for stopping by Mela <3

  3. I know just what you are talking about, I think all Dr. should read this, I have been sick for a year now and have been telling the Dr. it was lymes bet no they have sent me to three more Dr. and so many test that I have lost count, Med can run over 100 dollar for each, nothing has helped, Thank you for this and please make sure all Dr. have it. I will take it to mine

  4. It’s a no brainier. Keep your immune system in top tune at all times and let nature kill bugs. This can belt the Lyme bugs.

  5. One other that you might add to your list is another spirochete that I was actually diagnosed with (by testing), which is Leptospirosis. It’s a disease that pet dogs used to regularly be vaccinated against, until it was decided that the vaccination was giving it to some dogs, and so it was taken out of the regular yearly vaccines.
No one knows anything about it – when you get it, you ‘should’ either get very sick, get treated, and get well within a few weeks, or you get it, and die – anything other than that, they know nothing about it.

  6. Please add to this anticardiolipin syndrome. Sometimes known as sticky blood disease. Can cause repeated miscarraige, preeclampsia, heart disease, stroke, blood clots, lupus, fibromyalgia, CFS, mimics ms & more – it’s a bad bad disease. I have it. My dad had it. Men & women get it. Or are born with it.

I might suggest one more disease to use as an umbrella. Tho Lyme, Bart, Babs, Erlichiosis & others are from ticks, Mosquitos, some say flies. And many diseases we are preprogrammed to get if the right key is turned.
However, I think that those who suffer the worst are those with GENETIC AUTOIMMUNE DEFICIENCY.
Difference here is GENETIC. That means BORN WITH.
It wreaks havoc from the beginning of one’s life. It is a SHAPE SHIFTER. And not nearly enough is known about it. Diagnosing and treating it,
I know this because I have it. I also have Lyme, Bartonella, Babesiosis, Epstein Barr, Anticardiolipin, allergies, asthma, Chronic Fatigue, lupus, fibromyalgia & severe arthritis. I now cannot walk upright without a walker. So painful. And frightening. I hope this was not too boring. Thank you.

    1. Thank you Andrea, I got it listed now.. and no never boring, thank you for sharing. I want to make this list as comprehensive as I can so thank you. <3

  7. Oh Lisa, You have gone and done it again….and I am so grateful! I dont know how you do it getting so much information clearly, concisely, and organized perfectly so that it is easy to read and understand for my sorry Lyme brain but you do a great job! I use your website far more than any other as my first in line go-to reference and memory refresher. I am also very happy you didnt “retire” a few months back. Thanks again for all your efforts and work you do for the community of Lyme! Peace, Vicki

    1. Aww that was so sweet Vicki..thank you so much. I am glad it helps! As far as retirement..haha i just retired out of all the plannning and coordinating protests and events that I was doing. But as far as information and current Lyme news, Ill continue with the facebook support and this website.. Thanks for your support Vicki. xoxo

      Hugs,
      Lisa

  8. You’ve covered a lot of ground here and made it clear. Good job. I wanted to alert you to a typo (the final word I copied which should be “example” under the heading Another point to consider is this:

Lyme is an autoimmune disease. It lowers your immune system. So do other things like mold exposure and stress. Everyone in the world carries viruses, bacteria and parasites in their bodies. When your immune system is not properly functioning, these opportunistic infections can take hold. For examply
