Candida is supposed to make up a very small part of your intestinal flora It is necessary and beneficial when in balance.  Some things can disrupt this balance and cause candida yeast to overgrow. When this happens the friendly bacteria becomes overtaken by candida yeast, and rapidly grows  throughout the intestinal tract and, eventually, throughout the entire body.

Yeast becomes a systemic infection when the friendly bacteria in your intestinal tract are destroyed by antibiotics, medications, birth control pills, drinking chlorinated water, stress, or by a bad  diet. The candida yeast fungi, which are stronger than the beneficial bacteria, survive the antibiotics or stressful conditions, and begin to thrive.

Whether your symptoms are mild or overwhelming, depends upon how strong your immune system is, how long the candida overgrowth has existed, and the quality of your diet. Even mild cases can be a challenge to correct.

Symptoms of candida yeast overgrowth include:

  •  Vaginal yeast infections/Jock itch
  •  Oral thrush (white coating on your tongue and back of throat)
  • Bloat after eating
  • Dry mouth
  • Blurry vision that comes and goes
  • Constipation/diarrhea
  • Rashes
  •  Migraine headaches
  • Sinus
  • Ear or eye infections
  • Toenail or skin fungus or rashes including jock itch
  • Food allergies
  • Brain fog
  • Depression
  • Hypoglycemia

THE TEST:  In the evening, put a clear glass of water by your bed. First thing in the morning, briefly rinse your mouth, swallow, then gather some saliva in your mouth and spit into the glass of water (be sure to spit out saliva, not mucus). Keep an eye on the water for half an hour — especially the first few minutes. If you have candida overgrowth, you will see one or more of the following:

1. Strings (legs) hanging down from the saliva.

2. Heavy-looking saliva at the bottom of the glass.

3. Cloudy specks suspended in the water.


Candida Causes Leaky Gut Syndrome and Food Allergies

As Candida takes over your intestines, the legs of it drill holes in your intestinal wall. This causes a leaky gut which allows undigested food and other toxins to enter the bloodstream. It’s also allows the candida to spread throughout your body. The villi in the intestinal tract, hair-like structures that help absorb vitamins, minerals, and different nutrients, become damaged. So you become less able to absorb nutrients from your food.

Over time candida destroy the protective mucus coating on the intestinal wall. When this happens, foods, chemicals, parasites, bacteria, yeast and viruses begin irritating the intestinal lining. This causes the immune system cells on the lining of the intestinal tract to activate in order to fight back. This activation causes inflammation and further irritation of the intestinal wall. And result in intestinal pain, cramps and irritation.

Holes in your intestines caused by the candida overgrowth and parasites, allow large particles of foods, pollens, chemicals, microorganisms, or other toxins to enter your bloodstream through the leaks. Otherwise they would not have entered the bloodstream. Once there your immune system takes over trying to remove these toxins and stray particles of food. You will start developing sensitivities to food you eat and which leads to allergic reactions.

So you can see why it is so important to nip yeast in the bud before it gets this far.

  1. Sue, I’m so glad you have a doctor who is using his/her head. I highly recommend the book, “Nourishing Traditions.” The author clearly and simply teaches you how to make fermented veggies, kombacha, and other probiotic-rich foods. She claims our ancestors had some fermented food at every meal. These good guy bacteria then line the stomach and protect us from leaky gut syndrome which can lead to allergies, sickness, and chronic conditions. We lymies need to protect ourselves from the devastation that antibiotics can cause.

    I have successfully made kombacha and kraut using this book. I’m going to try my hand at water kefir and piima cream next.

It’s a good thing for people to be reading this to improve their knowledge regarding how this yeast/candida starts building up or be assessed early to prevent from bringing damage to our body.

  3. My good doc recommended sauerkraut for candida. He said to “take sauerkraut” Those were his exact words, so I did! Here is what I learned.

    Any sauerkraut makes a difference but the ingredients list should just be cabbage and salt,
    3 – 5 forkfuls a day is all it takes and it works fairly fast.
    Unpasteurized sauerkraut works WAY better.
    You can make your own Kraut for relatively little money and a bit of effort.

    My body loves Kraut!
